Lumbermen, farmers, ranchers and mercantile owners established a trading center on the crest of the Yellow and Shoal rivers by the late 1800's. The Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad began building a track between Pensacola and the Apalachicola River in 1881. It was the first passenger and freight railroad track laid in northwest Florida. The railroad station was named Crestview due to the elevation of the crest at 235 feet above sea level, which makes the city the second highest elevation in Florida.
