Belmont is a suburb of the City of Lake Macquarie in New South Wales, Australia,
located 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Newcastle's central business district on the eastern
side of Lake Macquarie.
Belmont is situated on a sandy peninsula formed by the Tasman Sea on the east and
Lake Macquarie, the Southern Hemisphere's largest salt water lake, to the west.
The geology of Belmont is mainly quarternary sand in the southern part of the suburb and
Upper Permian in the north.
The Permian strata has an abundance of insect fossils which are world renowned and
have been studied intensively on and off for 100 years.
Over 170 new species of insect have been discovered in the tuffaceous chert bearing the fossils.
